Medical Waste Disposal
Most medical facilities have sharps, lancets, needles, and syringes generated from normal treatment of Patients. Improper handling and disposal can lead to needle sticks or spread of disease not only for those using health care products, but for anyone finding them including children, janitorial staff, and garbage collectors. Needle sticks can result in diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis, and Syphilis. To keep Sharps and other potentially infectious waste out of the trash, and therefore prevent the spread of disease, proper disposal is needed.
It is important that the Facility's Environmental Service staff understands what Regulated Medical Waste is and what is considered trash. When defining Regulated Medical Waste, the amount of contamination and the risk of injury through disease is the key. Some Medical Facilities believe they must dispose of all items that have been merely contaminated with blood or other potentially infectious materials regardless of the amount of contamination or risk from the spread of disease. The Occupational Health and Safety Administration regulations do not require this. In fact, according the Center for Disease Control only 10 % of the waste from a Medical Facility is actually Regulated Waste with needles and other Sharps being the bulk of that material. XMED offers Compliance Training that can result in an immediate reduction in the volume of material generated at most Medical Facilities.
